Google Doodle Salutes Workers on International Labour Day

Google sure knows the value of labourers and has decided to honour them on the occasion of International Labour Day celebrated in India today. International Labour Day or International Workers’ Day is celebrated on the 1st of May in many nations of the world. Over 80 countries officially celebrate the day by giving employees or labourers a holiday.

Labour Day is celebrated as an annual holiday in almost 80 countries.

The doodle on the homepage shows Google's logo in the shape of building blocks with several professionals busy in their respective jobs.

The doodle features an IT professional working on her computer; a gardener watering a tree; a painter putting the finishing touches on the letter 'O'; and a plumber fixing a leak in the letter 'E'.

A helicopter hovering over the second 'G' and a satellite dish set up on the letter 'E' are the other features on the doodle.

Labour Day has its origins in the labour unionism that led to the eight hour day movement. The movement led to eight-hour day work rules, eight hours for recreation and eight hours for rest.

In India, Worker's Day is celebrated on May 1 and considered a public holiday. The first International Workers’ Day (also known as May Day) was celebrated in Madras (now Chennai) by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan in 1923.

However, many countries do not celebrate Labour Day on May 1. Australia, for example celebrates Labour Day on the first Monday of October. In Canada, the day is observed on the first Monday of September.

Last year, Google did have a doodle commemorating Labour day. The doodle was, however, not posted on the search engine's India page.
